Public and Private School Policy
Teenworks’ mission is to provide educational services to home school families who desire to train their children in a biblical worldview. In keeping with this mission, Teenworks has established the following policy regarding eligibility in the Teenworks program.
1. PUBLIC SCHOOL ATTENDANCE – In the state of Michigan, a student enrolled in four or more public education courses is considered a full-time student and thus qualifies for state funds. If a student is counted as a full-time public school student, he/she does not qualify as a home school student. Therefore, a student may not enroll in more than three classes in the public school system and still participate in Teenworks classes and events.
2. PRIVATE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE – Likewise, if a student is enrolled in more than three classes at a private school, he/she does not qualify as a home school student and therefore is ineligible to participate in Teenworks classes or events.
3. COLLEGE ATTENDANCE – Students choosing to participate in a dual enrollment program must take at least two home school classes for high school credit to qualify as a home school student and therefore participate in Teenworks classes and events including graduation.
4. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES – AP courses are counted toward a student’s enrollment status and state funding and therefore fall under the guidelines regarding public or private school attendance.
5. Adherence to the above policy is required for participation in the Teenworks Program, but it may not qualify a student to participate in other home school organizations or events. For example, Teenworks speech and debate students participate in tournaments sponsored by Homeschool Communicators for Christ (HCC) and Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). These organizations require 51% of the student’s education be home school courses.
