Teenworks is the official sponsor of the Gamma Beta Chapter of the Eta Sigma Alpha Honor Society. If you are a parent of a home school student who wants opportunities for leadership, community service, scholarship and networking with other like minded students, please consider joining. If you are a home school student, and are interested in making yourself more appealing to colleges in the future, and building up your transcript for scholarship opportunities, you may want to apply. Frequently Asked Questions
* Goals – The goals of the organization is to form integrity in students through four key areas: leadership, community service, networking, and scholarship. Eta Sigma Alpha? Eta is the Greek alphabet letter for “H”, Sigma is the Greek letter for “S” and Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Put them together – HÓA – and it stands for the first Home School Society. The headquarters for the society is in Houston, Texas.
* Service Project – The project should be beneficial to the homeschool community or a homeschool group and be a positive learning experience for the ESA members. All members must participate in the yearly project completing 40 hours of service within the school year. This must include 15 hours dedicated to the yearly NHS project. It is also required that each member must work 2 hours at the annual INCH conference in May.
* When – The students must attend the Honor Society Induction Ceremony which is held on the second Monday in October at the Teenworks Building. Subsequent meeting frequency and dates will be decided by the membership and/or Executive Board. There is a non-refundable fee of $25.00 with application. This pays for expenses and each student receives a NHS t-shirt.
* Testing Requirements – A candidate must have taken one of the nationally recognized, age appropriate tests and scored at least: SAT-1800, ACT-26 or PSAT-180 (verbal + math + writing); or 90% in on the composite (complete) battery on the IOWA, Stanford, or California achievement tests.Students MUST have confirmation of passing the test BEFORE appliying for the Honor Society.
A HEADS-UP- Some of these tests are taken in the spring, before the fall sign up for Honor Society, so think forward.
* Student Requirements – all students must abide by moral code as follows: abstaining from sexual activity of any kind, abstaining from use of foul language, and abstaining from use of illegal drugs or alcohol. Students must also submit a testimony, a reference from a pastor/minister, a reference from a well known community leader, and a yearly GPA of 3.5 or better to Teenworks by the announced deadline in early fall.
* Age Requirements – Senior Honor Society – grades 9-12.
