Course Description:

English I will continue to develop the skills of precision, meaningful and concise writing from the students. Writing well is a necessary life skill. This skill demands regular systematic instruction and practice. Students will write a variety of essays. Essays include but are not limited to:

  • Narrative
  • Descriptive
  • Persuasive
  • Evaluative
  • Compare and Contrast
  • Personal

In addition to practicing the craft of essay writing, students will also be introduced to the timed essay.  Instruction and practice in timed essays will be given. Composition material will be taken from a variety of sources including The Institute for Excellence in Writing.

Students will complete a research paper of 10 pages.

Vocabulary will be taken from Vocabulary from Classical Roots-level C.

Students will continue their grammar study/ review this year. Material for grammar will be taken from a variety of sources including:

  • Enough about Grammar
  • Our Mother Tongue
  • Material from veteran Teenworks English tutor Ruth Ann Frederick

Literature and poetry will be analyzed. Literature selections for the 2012-2013 year are Silas Marner and Ivanhoe. Literature will be taught using the Socratic Method. The Grammar of Poetry will comprise the poetry unit.

Course Prerequisites:

Completion of English 8 or a diagnostic test/writing sample if the student did not complete English 8 with Teenworks.

Copy Fee:

A $30 copy fee will be assessed – the copy fee covers all grammar worksheets for the class. This fee is payable to the tutor on the first day of class.
