Course Description:
Practical Skills is a class intended to enhance your child’s knowledge of basic living skills while further adding to the foundations of godly character which you are building at home.  The class will combine biblical principles with the study of cooking, gardening, forgotten household skills, etiquette, fitness, and handcrafts.  While this class does emphasize much of the same thematic skills from year to year, the projects do vary annually to encompass different creative techniques. There will be very minimal homework as much of the learning is very hands-on and will be completed in class itself.   Parents are always welcome to join in weekly class activities.

Thursdays

Course Tutor:

Jenny Wilcox

Course Description:

Kidworks music is a fun, hands on class where students experience a variety of musical styles, basic music theory skills, and music performance skills. We learn about orchestral instruments and also have a “Missions Music” day where we explore music from another culture.

The focus of the fall semester is the Christmas program. Auditions are a part of the process of learning the program as well. Students will be singing, acting, and performing in this program, which is held during the school day on the last Thursday before Christmas. Please see note below for more information on the Christmas program.

Course Notes:
Parents may be asked to help with costumes and/or props for the Christmas program on a volunteer basis.

One practice CD per family is provided; extra CDs will cost $2.00 each.

A note about the Christmas program:

Auditions are held for all parts of the Christmas program. Those students not wishing to audition for a speaking part in the program will be assigned to the choir, and will only be responsible for singing the musical selections during the program. Students will have one to two weeks to rehearse for parts they are interested in, after which auditions will be held during class time.   Students are expected to have their speaking parts and the songs memorized to the best of their ability for the performance.

Course Description:

Kidworks History is a hands-on course designed to introduce young children to American History through applied activities and historical fiction. This course will spark your students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for history as they learn the subject in story fashion while participating in engaging materials.

This history course is a three-year rotational study of American history from Columbus’s discovery of America to the turn of the 19th century. The first year covers early explorers, American Indians, and the establishment of the American colonies. In the second year, students learn about the American Revolution followed by a study of the Westward Expansion across the continent. Finally, the third year examines the Civil War and the changes brought on by the Industrial Revolution.

Classroom instruction includes geography and timeline skills as well as interactive activities such as crafts, games, music, cooking, or dramatic reenactments. Homework assignments incorporate skills in reading comprehension and writing. Parents will learn history with their children as they read together the selection of biographies and award-winning historical fiction. Each semester culminates with the completion of a portfolio that will become a keepsake of your student’s work.

Kidworks Writing
2010-2011 School Year
Full Year Course
Grade 1-3
Thursday

Course Tutor:
Stephanie Schmidt
mrs.sschmidt@gmail.com

Course Description:

First Grade:

Since many of the students are not reading or writing fluently, we start with narration and progress to creative writing.  We also work on comprehension and memory through short stories and poetry.  Grammar is introduced and students also produce a book of poetry for Author’s Day at the end of the year.

Second Grade:

By second grade most are reading and writing a little.  We will continue with narration and dictation.  Next, we will begin complete sentences and copying from the board.  All parts of speech will be covered using music and poetry.  We will continue memorizing poetry and creative writing will be taught in the last nine weeks.  Students will write and illustrate a short story, which will be presented at “Author’s Day”.

Third Grade:

Third graders should be reading and writing well.  We start our program using the Institute for Excellence in Writing, teaching key word outlines and paragraph structure. Students will also learn how to use dress-ups and sentence openers in each paragraph.  Grammar is covered, reviewing all parts of speech.  Students will write and illustrate a short story or report about a person, place or animal and will present their “books” at Author’s Day.
